May 12, 2016 – Rolla, Mo. – Missouri-based global technology leader Brewer Science once again commended the Missouri Congressional Delegation for their bipartisan support of the Defend Trade Secrets Act, which was signed into law.

The Defend Trade Secrets Act is a new tool companies like Brewer Science can use to help stop the surge of intellectual property (IP) theft that is threatening American innovation and jobs. The new law will make it harder to steal trade secrets and creates stronger enforcement measures to go after criminals.

Last year Brewer Science won a lawsuit against individuals with ties to a Chinese manufacturing company who stole trade secrets from the company to create a knockoff product.

“This new law will enable Brewer Science and other companies in the business of innovation to continue creating new products and technologies while reducing the threat of the companies’ hard work being stolen by IP thieves,” said Dr. Terry Brewer, president and founder of Brewer Science. “I want to take this opportunity to thank Missouri’s Congressional Delegation for their work and bipartisan support of the Defend Trade Secrets Act. With President Obama’s signature, this new law gives us new tools to combat IP theft.”

The Defend Trade Secrets Act:

  • Harmonizes U.S. law by building on the Economic Espionage Act to create a uniform standard for trade secret misappropriation, allowing companies to craft one set of nondisclosure policies secure in the knowledge that federal law will protect their trade secrets.
  • Provides for injunctions and damages to preserve evidence, prevent disclosure, and account for the economic harm to American companies whose trade secrets are stolen, without preventing employee mobility.
  • Updates federal law to provide consistent remedies for trade secret misappropriation, similar to other forms of intellectual property, such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights, which are all covered by federal civil law.
